I moved to the Valley in 2010 and am only now just leanring about "roof rats".
Gotta admit, I immediately thought they'd look like this:
When in reality they really look like this:

I hoped they would be more like this:
The point is pick your citrus to prevent these little bastards from invading your yard and house.
Plus you can donate your citrus each Saturday between Jan. 26 and March 23, people can drop off their unwanted citrus between 8 a.m. and noon at the BPOE Lodge #2149 in Scottsdale at 6398 E. Oak St. The fruit will be donated to food banks, county prisons and Native American communities. Call 602-273-0435 or 602-549-0401 for more information.
St. Mary's Food Bank is also hosting a citrus collection this Saturday.
The oranges and grapefruit collected will be juiced and frozen, allowing St. Mary's to hand it out to those in need throughout the year.
There will be four collection locations for "Super Citrus Saturday."
- North Phoenix Baptist Church, Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road
- Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, 56th Street and Lafayette Boulevard
- St. Mary's Food Bank Surprise location, 13050 W. Elm Street
- North Scottsdale Bashas' Plaza, 10111 E. Bell Road
Donations are accepted between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at each location.
Remember, while picking the fruit from your trees may mean some weekend work, it's nowhere near as tough as trying to persuade roof rats to move from your home once they declare it as their own.
