UFC 141 Predictions

It's New Year's weekend and that means college bowl games. It's also Week 17 of the NFL. And still the UFC didn't think there was enough bone-crushing action happening this weekend so they squeezed in a PPV on Friday night. Here's a look at my picks for UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem

Main Event

Brock Lesnar (5-2) vs. Alistair Overeem (35-11-1)

The wrestler vs. the striker. It's a classic matchup, the only difference is usually the striker gives up a size advantage. Not so much with Overeem, who is pretty evenly matched with Big Brock. If Brock can't keep Overeem off his feet, which I honestly don't think he can, then he's toast by Round 3. With that said, I'm a huge Brock fan, going back to his WWE days, so I'm going with my heart and not my head on this one.

Winner: Brock Lesnar

Undercard

Donald Cerrone (17-3-1) vs. Nate Diaz (14-7)

Probably the toughest fight to predict on the card. Cerrone is an ace kickboxer who been working on his ground game. Diaz is a good all-around fighter that only struggles when matched up against strong wrestlers, which Cerrone is not...yet. Diaz also has a three inch reach advantage and a very scrappy attitude (see: short temper). I'm thinking this one might go the distance with Diaz winning on points.

Winner: Nate Diaz

---

Jon Fitch (23-13-1-1) vs. Johnny Hendricks (11-1)

Fitch is coming off a recent shoulder surgery but that won't slow him down if he can get Hendricks to the ground. Hendricks had an impressive UFC debut but has yet to do anything incredibly noteworthy since then. I say Fitch closes in on Hendricks and finishes him on the ground.

Winner: Jon Fitch

---

Vladimir Matyushenko (26-5) vs. Alexander Gustafsson (12-1)

I'm calling them Vlad and Alex or else my spellckecker will revolt against me. Anyway, Vlad is 40 years-old and is an MMA journeyman. Alex is 24 and has something to prove. I say Alex takes the challenge and moves one step up the Light Heavyweight ladder.

Winner: Alex

---

Nam Phan (17-9) vs. Jimy Hettes (9-0)

Phan has never been submitted despite his nine losses. I don't know much about Hettes and I don't think he's gonne get Phan to submit here. But I don't like betting against an unknown opponent. This is Hettes' chance to prove he can hang in the UFC and I think he'll take it.

Winner: Jimy Hettes
