Robert Plant forming a brand new band

Robert Plant is part of a new musical collective called The Sensational Space Shifters that will make its live debut when the group headlines the 2012 WOMAD Festival , The Guardian reports. The world music extravaganza, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, is scheduled for July 27-29 in Malmesbury, England. A post on Plant's Facebook page reveals that the group's performance will take place on the last day of the festival.

The Led Zeppelin singer's latest project features members of his old backing band, The Strange Sensation -- including multi-instrumentalist Justin Adams -- as well as Gambian musician Juldeh Camara . According to a bio supplied to WOMAD.co.uk, the outfit says it's inspired by "the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton and [draws] on influences collected in a lifetime of meander and journeying."

Plant played with The Strange Sensation from 2001 to 2007, prior to beginning his forays into Americana music with Alison Krauss and then with The Band of Joy .

The WOMAD Festival, which was co-founded by Peter Gabriel , was first held in 1982.
