This is a topic that people have debated since Day 1.
There are really only 3 bands that can be considered *legitimately* in this discussion: The Beatles, The Stones, and Led Zeppelin.
I think the Beatles catalog speaks for itself. The first few records were (for all intents & purposes) "boy band" material. They grew into legends. But, created the measuring stick against which all pop culture reactions are measured. The Stones just released a kick ass new song...but have also put out a lot of sh*t over the years.
Zeppelin...Well, it's simply unfathomable that they can still be this relevant across the board. I urge you to check out the new "Celebration Day" DVD. They remain...CRUSHING! No samples. No pitch-correction. Just four (supremely talented) artists...master of their instruments and timing.
Jason Bonham is not John Bonham. He is never going to be. That doesn't mean he isn't every bit as good a drummer. He has the swing necessary to drive the Zeppelin machine. He *is* their drummer now. If they ever decided to make a full-on, new record...Jason can do the band justice. It's not even a question anymore.
Led Zeppelin lay it down on this show better than any band that have come before, or since. They are the best. Ever.
Mind you...they're not even my favorite band. I, along with you, just have to accept that there are great bands...and there's Zeppelin. They are in a one-team league. And the undisputed Champions.
